Skylight Frame review

We have not used a Skylight ourselves. This is what it is, from the manufacturer's materials and documented owner feedback.

A picture frame standing on a shelf beside a plant

Skylight's whole idea is one address. Each frame gets an email address, and anything photographic sent to it appears on the screen. No app, no account for the sender, no invitation to accept. For a family where the enthusiastic photographers are not the technical ones, that removes the actual barrier.

Before the detail: we have not used a Skylight Frame. This page is built from Skylight's published materials, retailer listings and documented owner reports. We say so because the difference between that and a tested review is real, and most sites blur it.

Some links on this page go to Amazon. If you buy something, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you — it never changes which products we pick or the order they appear in. Full disclosure.

How we picked

We don’t run a product lab. Every pick here is chosen by reading the things that actually tell you whether something works for weak hands, poor eyesight or shaky fingers: the manufacturer’s own specifications, the retailer listing, the measurements and weights, and what owners report in their reviews — especially the one-star ones. We read the complaints before the praise.

Prices change constantly, so we send you to Amazon to see today’s price rather than printing a number that goes stale. More about how we choose.

What it is

A touchscreen Wi-Fi photo frame, commonly bought in the 10-inch size. It is set up once over Wi-Fi, after which photos sent to its email address appear automatically. There is also an app for family who prefer it.

At the receiving end the interface is deliberately thin: tap to pause, swipe to move between pictures, and very little else. That is the right design for this audience — the fewer things a frame can be put into, the better.

What it does well

  • The email address. Any relative with an email account can send a photo, including the ones who will never install an app.
  • Nothing to do at the receiving end. Photos appear; the frame shows them.
  • A simple enough touchscreen that a non-technical person can pause on a photo they like.
  • It is a good gift because it can be set up fully before wrapping, so it arrives already full.

What to know before buying

  • Skylight sells an optional paid tier for extra features. Check exactly what is included today before buying, so you are not surprised later.
  • The panel is widescreen, so tall phone photos are letterboxed or cropped. Ask the family to send landscape shots, or crop before sending.
  • It needs the recipient's Wi-Fi password during setup — do it at their house, or get the password first.
  • If the household has no internet at all, this is the wrong frame. Buy a card-fed frame instead.

Who should buy something else

If the whole family already shares photos through one app and nobody minds installing something, Aura's app is slicker and there is no paid tier to consider at all.

If you want the frame to keep working regardless of what any company decides in five years, Pix-Star plays plain USB sticks and charges nothing ongoing.

If there is no broadband, none of these works. A card-fed frame is the answer, and our no-Wi-Fi page covers them.

Questions people ask

▸Does the Skylight Frame need a subscription?

Sending photos works without one, but Skylight offers an optional paid tier for extra features. Check what is included at the time you buy, because these plans change.

▸How do you send photos to a Skylight Frame?

Email them to the frame's own address, which is given during setup, or use the app. The email route is the reason most people choose it — anyone with email can send without installing anything.

▸Can you send videos to a Skylight Frame?

Video support has generally been part of Skylight's paid tier rather than the base frame. Confirm on the current product page before buying if video matters to you.

▸Is Skylight or Aura better?

Skylight if some senders will never install an app; Aura if they all will and you want no paid tier in the picture. Our head-to-head compares them properly.
