Aura vs Skylight: which digital photo frame?
Both are easy for the person receiving. The difference is entirely at the sending end.
By Selena H. · Last checked October 13, 2026 · How we keep pages current

Buy Skylight if some of the people who will send photos will never install an app — its frames have their own email address, so anyone can send. Buy Aura if everyone is happy with an app: the sending experience is slicker and there is no paid tier at all.
For the person receiving the frame, both are the same: photos appear, nothing to do. So the decision rests on who is sending, which is not how these frames are usually compared.

How we picked
We don’t run a product lab. Every pick here is chosen by reading the things that actually tell you whether something works for weak hands, poor eyesight or shaky fingers: the manufacturer’s own specifications, the retailer listing, the measurements and weights, and what owners report in their reviews — especially the one-star ones. We read the complaints before the praise.
Prices change constantly, so we send you to Amazon to see today’s price rather than printing a number that goes stale. More about how we choose.

Choose Aura if...
- Everyone who will send photos has a smartphone and will install one more app.
- You want certainty about cost — no tier to reconsider later.
- Picture quality matters to you; the Carver's panel is excellent.
Choose Skylight if...
- At least one important sender will not install an app, ever.
- The family is widely spread and photos will come from many directions.
- You like the idea of a frame anybody can reach with a plain email.
Choose neither if...
There is no broadband in the house. Both of these are Wi-Fi frames and will do nothing at all without it. A card-fed frame is the answer, and the maintenance question that comes with it is covered on our no-Wi-Fi page.
You also want the frame to work regardless of a company's future decisions — in which case a frame that plays plain USB sticks, like Pix-Star, is the more durable choice.
Questions people ask
▸Is Aura or Skylight better for grandparents?
Both are equally easy for the grandparent — photos simply appear. Choose on the senders: Skylight if some relatives will only ever send email, Aura if everyone will use the app.
▸Does Aura have a subscription?
No. Aura includes unlimited photo storage with no ongoing fee, which is one of the main reasons people choose it over frames with optional paid tiers.
▸Can you email photos to an Aura frame?
No — Aura is app-based. If email sending matters because of who is sending, Skylight is the frame that supports it.
▸Which frame handles portrait photos better?
Neither is ideal: both are widescreen, so tall phone photos get letterboxed or cropped. A 4:3 frame such as Pix-Star handles a mixed album better.
