Best lift chairs for elderly adults

A lift chair tilts forward to put you on your feet. Fit decides whether that works; massage functions do not.

An armchair in a bright living room

A lift chair is a recliner whose base tilts the whole seat forward and upward, bringing you close to standing. For someone who can no longer push out of an ordinary armchair, it is the difference between sitting where they want to sit and sitting where they are able to get out of.

The specifications that matter are unglamorous: seat height, seat depth, and whether the chair has one motor or two. Heat, massage and USB ports are sold hard and change nothing about whether the chair helps.

Measure the person before you shop. Seat height should let their feet rest flat with knees at roughly hip level; seat depth should let them sit back with a couple of inches between the seat edge and the back of the knee. A chair too deep leaves the feet dangling, which makes standing harder rather than easier — the exact opposite of why it was bought.

Pick by what’s hard

Most lists sort by price. That is not how this decision actually gets made, so here it is sorted by the thing that is getting in the way.

Cannot push up out of an ordinary chair
MCombo Power Lift Recliner (single motor) — any lift chair solves this. Do not overspend on positions that will not be used.
Swollen ankles or legs
MCombo Dual Motor Power Lift Recliner — you need legs up with the back upright, which requires two motors. A single-motor chair cannot do it.
Sleeps in the chair
MCombo Dual Motor Power Lift Recliner — look for a lay-flat dual-motor model, and mention it to the doctor — sleeping upright regularly is worth a conversation.
Small room
Esright Power Lift Chair Recliner — measure the space including wall clearance when reclined, not just the chair's footprint.
Larger frame
CANMOV Power Lift Recliner — seat width and weight capacity are the specifications to check. A narrow seat is uncomfortable within the hour.

How we picked

We don’t run a product lab. Every pick here is chosen by reading the things that actually tell you whether something works for weak hands, poor eyesight or shaky fingers: the manufacturer’s own specifications, the retailer listing, the measurements and weights, and what owners report in their reviews — especially the one-star ones. We read the complaints before the praise.

Prices change constantly, so we send you to Amazon to see today’s price rather than printing a number that goes stale. More about how we choose.

The picks in full

1. Best for independent back and leg positions

Two motors mean the legs can go up without the back going down, which matters for swollen ankles.

The practical advantage of dual motors is raising the legs while sitting upright — exactly the position recommended for leg swelling, and impossible on a single-motor chair where the back and footrest move together.

MCombo's dual-motor models also lie flat or near flat, which turns the chair into a bed for someone who sleeps better upright or cannot easily get to a bedroom.

Check the stated weight capacity and seat dimensions on the specific listing — this range includes several sizes, and buying the wrong seat width is a common and expensive mistake.

Good

  • Legs up with the back upright — the position for swelling
  • Lies flat or near flat on many models
  • Several sizes in the range

Watch out for

  • Heavy; two people and a clear route to the room
  • Check seat width and depth against the person, not the room

2. Best for getting out of the chair, at a lower price

MCombo Power Lift Recliner (single motor)

Does the lift job properly without paying for positions that will not be used.

If the only reason for buying is standing up unaided, a single motor does exactly that, and the saving is significant.

The back and footrest move together, so there is no legs-up-back-upright position. For someone who sits, watches television and gets up again, that is not a loss.

Good

  • Does the lift function well
  • Simpler mechanism, fewer parts
  • Noticeably cheaper than dual motor

Watch out for

  • Cannot raise legs independently
  • Not suitable for sleeping in

A broader seat than most budget chairs, which matters more than any extra feature.

Seat width is where cheap lift chairs most often disappoint: a narrow seat with fixed arms is uncomfortable within an hour and nearly impossible to shift position in.

This range runs wider than most at the price, which for a chair someone will sit in for several hours a day is the specification worth paying for.

Good

  • Wider seat than most budget chairs
  • Straightforward controls
  • Reasonable price for the size

Watch out for

  • Single-motor models have limited positions
  • Fabric options are limited

A more compact footprint, for a flat or a room where a full-size recliner will not fit.

Lift chairs are large, and in a small living room the difference between models is whether the chair dominates the room or merely occupies a corner.

Measure the room including the clearance behind the chair when reclined — some models need several inches from the wall, which catches people out after delivery.

Good

  • Smaller footprint than full-size recliners
  • Simple two-button handset
  • Assembles without tools on most models

Watch out for

  • Smaller seat — check against the person
  • Check wall clearance when reclined

Measure before you order

  1. Seat height: measure from the floor to the back of the person's knee while they sit with feet flat. The chair's seat height should be close to this.
  2. Seat depth: measure from the back of the hip to the back of the knee, then subtract about two inches. A chair deeper than this leaves the feet dangling.
  3. Seat width: measure across the hips at the widest point, then add two to four inches for comfort.
  4. Overall height, for anyone over about six feet — standard chairs leave tall people's heads unsupported.
  5. The room: chair footprint, plus the wall clearance the listing requires when fully reclined, plus the route in from the front door.

The things sold hard that do not matter

Heat and massage are pleasant and do nothing about getting out of the chair. If they come included, fine; they are a poor reason to choose one chair over a better-fitting one.

USB ports and cup holders are convenience features. Judge the chair on fit and lift, then treat these as tie-breakers.

What does matter and is rarely advertised: battery backup, so the chair still lifts in a power cut. Without it, a power failure can leave someone stuck in a reclined chair. Check whether the model has it.

Medicare Part B may cover the seat-lift mechanism — not the whole chair — as durable medical equipment with a doctor's order. Ask the supplier about the lift mechanism specifically, since that is how the claim is made.

Questions people ask

▸What is the best lift chair for an elderly person?

The one that fits them: seat height so feet rest flat, seat depth so they can sit back without their feet dangling, and a weight rating above their weight. Dual motors only if legs-up-back-upright is needed.

▸Does Medicare pay for a lift chair?

Medicare Part B may cover the seat-lift mechanism, not the chair itself, with a doctor's order establishing medical necessity. You pay for the furniture part. Ask suppliers specifically about billing the lift mechanism.

▸What is the difference between a lift chair and a power recliner?

A power recliner reclines but does not help you up. A lift chair tilts the whole seat forward and upward to bring you close to standing. If getting up is the problem, only a lift chair addresses it.

▸Do lift chairs work in a power cut?

Only those with battery backup, which many models include for exactly this reason. Without it a chair can be left reclined with someone in it. Check the listing — it is rarely prominent.
